Growing the Community of Practice in Our Own Backyard
Communities of practice (CoP) are groups of people who share an interest and expertise in a given domain. For example, College and University Educators (CUE) Special Interest Group (SIG) members share an interest and expertise in language education. Through interacting with each other, members of a CoP such as the CUE SIG learn how to deepen their knowledge and add to their expertise. In my talk, I will first provide a brief history of the development of CoP theory as it grew out of research on apprenticeships to the present day. I will then describe how I applied CoP theory to my dissertation research. I will then describe how we can look at CUE through a CoP lens. Finally, I invite audience members to consider ways to harness the power of our CoP and make an even more successful SIG.
